This 2 day workshop is an introduction to workplace coaching and mentoring and has been designed to meet the needs of individuals who are in their first coaching role.

The Core Skill for Coaching aims to provide practising and potential team leaders and their first line managers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to perform effectively as workplace coaches as part of their normal work role.

  • Practising Team Leaders
  • Potential Team Leaders
  • First Line Managers

Please note: If you wish to study towards a nationally recognised qualification in Coaching and Mentoring, you are advised to consider alternatively enrolling onto our ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring in Management.

What will the course cover?


In the first day the role of workplace coach is explored and understanding good practice in workplace coaching. Here participants assess their own ability to use a variety of interpersonal communication skills when giving effective feedback to learners, overcoming barriers and appreciate the different types of coaching and professional standards/behaviours.


Participants will look at the range and value of different learning resources to support safe and effective coaching, alongside practical skills in how to monitor and record learner progress.

Participants will also look at the need of agreeing a coaching contract with the client and review suitable coaching questioning models which will aid development of individual motivational questions.


Participants will undertake practical 1-1 coaching sessions to develop and practice their coaching techniques and review their own workplace coaching and performance.

Participants will understand how and when to use a varied range of tolls and techniques to assist their coachee in moving and making effective decisions.

What will you/they learn?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the effective workplace coach and mentors roles, responsibilities, characteristics and behaviours
  • Explain the importance of assessing learning styles, agreeing learning outcomes and overcoming potential barriers to ensure that workplace coaching is effective
  • Understand how to develop the relationship between coach and coachee against professional standards
  • Assess own ability to use a variety of interpersonal communication strategies and give effective feedback to learners on their performance to coach them in the workplace
  • Know how to identify resources to support safe and effective coaching in the workplace
  • Know how to identify resources to support safe and effective coaching in the workplace
  • Know how to monitor, assess and record learners' progress towards their goals
  • Know how to use coaching records to identify areas for improvement in own workplace coaching practice
  • Plan and organise workplace coaching sessions
  • Undertake practical 1-1 coaching
  • Monitor and review own workplace coaching performance

No pre-course preparation is required for this course.

Delegates are requested to complete a pre-course questionnaire that will be handed to the tutor before the first day of the course. This ensures that the course is delivered to the highest quality and is relevant to delegate's needs and objectives.

An end of course assessment will take place on the third day..
