CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)


Duration: 5 Days over a 5 month period

The Edexcel Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QCF) is a teaching qualification that prepares learners for teaching in a wide range of contexts.

These qualifications give learners the opportunity to:

  • Develop knowledge related to teaching and learning in an associate teaching role
  • Develop skills in teaching and learning
  • Achieve a nationally-recognised Level 4 qualification
  • Develop personal growth and engagement in learning.

This qualification does not qualify the learner to be a teach, but gives a broad range of knowledge, awareness and skills required to teach within the lifelong learning sector.

This course is delivered over 5 month period in a series of workshops. Assessment is made up of assignment, project, micro teach and peer assessments. There is a requirement for learners to undertake a minimum of 30 hours of teaching.

Who is the Course For?

The BTEC Level 4 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector offers support for learners who are over 19 and want a follow on from PTLLS qualification. The couple will offer learners a more advanced level of knowledge, awareness and skill development that meets the requirements within the sector.

The course and its content is aimed at professional people, already in a teaching (as part-time or associate teacher), tutoring or in an assessing role. The mandatory units and their content are considered appropriate for the many related roles undertaken by teachers, tutors and trainers particularly in work-based learning.

What Will They/You Learn?

By the end of this course delegates will have developed their professional capabilities to become a more self-evaluative and reflective education professional. Learners will develop their knowledge and skill in planning, resourcing, managing, assessing and evaluating learning in their specialist area.

They will learn to better manage the wide range of Lifelong Learners to be found in the sector, growing an understanding of the Lifelong Learning Sector and of how they might play an active role in its future development.

Thus, learners will build on their knowledge and experience through study at an advanced level in order to enhance their understanding of the professional role.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates are required to:

  • Attend all workshops & tutorial days*
  • Complete any independent work required between workshops
  • Complete Reflective Reviews or Exercises*
  • Complete and submit Assignments*
  • Complete or Attend Assessments*

What will the Course Cover?

You will cover a vast range of topics within the lifelong learning sector.

As part of this qualification learners will cover the following 9 mandatory units plus 2 optional units:

  • Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Lifelong Learning
  • Understanding Inclusive Learning and Teaching in Lifelong Learning
  • Using Inclusive Learning and Teaching Approaches in Lifelong Learning
  • Facilitate Learning and Development for Individuals
  • Principles of Assessment in Lifelong Learning
  • Delivering Lifelong Learning
  • Assessing learners in Lifelong Learning
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners
  • Using resources for Lifelong Learning

Optional Units:

  • Equality and Diversity
  • Evaluating Learning Programmes

The qualification is delivered over a 5 month period in a series of 5 workshops. Assessment is made up of assignment, project, micro teach and peer assessments. Tutor support is available throughout the programme.

*There is a requirement for learners to undertake a minimum of 30 hours teaching therefore, delegates should have access to teaching practice. If in doubt please speak to our advisors who will endeavour to help.

Pre-Course Preparation and Assessment

There is a requirement to complete a short initial assessment and submit a CV before commencement. The course tutor shall arrange a short informal interview with each potential learner to ensure that the requirements for teaching practice can be met and that CTLLS is the correct programme for them (most often a telephone discussion).

Standard Assessment

  • 30 hours teaching practice & reflective account
  • 30 minute micro teach assessed by peers and 1000+ word evaluation
  • Witness testimony by a peer or manager
  • Up to date CV
  • Up to date CPD record

Assessment of Mandatory Units

A range of assessment techniques are used including (but not limited to):

  • Written Assignments
  • Written Reports
  • Design and Development of a Learning Programme
  • Producing a scheme of work
  • Producing lesson plans and resources to accompany a programme
