Volvo Construction Equipment is the distribution organisation in Great Britain for the full range of Volvo Construction products. Operating from eight Customer Support Centres throughout Great Britain, supplemented by strategically located home based engineers, Volvo offers high level support that you would expect from a global construction equipment manufacturer.
Volvo’s offering consists not only of class leading construction equipment but also a range of support products covering parts, service and finance.
Volvo was searching for a training provider who could deliver a Leadership and Management Programme to develop practising and aspiring Managers in line with the needs of the business. Volvo required a programme that would enable sustainable growth throughout the business and for the individuals attending. The programme was centred on:
- Delegates developing effective leadership behaviours to support business strategy and plans
- Delegates understanding their management roles and responsibilities, whilst becoming accountable for their performance and that of their people
- Delegates being able to manage projects, both large and small, and co-ordinate the team to deliver against goals and objectives
After completing a thorough diagnostic to understand Volvo’s objectives we were able to provide a proposal of recommendations, focused on providing a measurable return on investment.
The solution included a blended ILM qualification, which was tailored to the business and aligned to its growth aspirations. All of the training needed to be planned and scheduled in accordance with Volvo’s business strategy. The programme chosen needed to focus on various experiential group activities, delivered in a way where skills could be directly transferred back into the workplace and fit around Volvo’s working environment.
TSW’s solution was to provide a structured but flexible Leadership and Management solution that tackled key areas for development, and provided Volvo's Managers with the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification. The programme chosen was the ILM Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management. This 8 day programme was specifically tailored to give practising and aspiring first line managers a solid foundation for development in their roles.
An integral part of the programme was the access candidates had to TSW's online learning management system (LMS). This provided learners with access to online learning materials that supplemented the work covered during workshops. The system provided learners with a forum to promote social learning and provided a direct channel for communication with TSW's tutor. All ILM assessment was managed through the Learning Management System, creating a seamless process for marking and feedback.
The programme was broken down into 8 modules (1 module per month) which were structured as follows:
- Introduction to Leadership & Building the Team
- Understanding Change & Planning Change in the Workplace
- Problem Solving & Making Decisions
- Achieving Objectives Through Time Management & Effective Meetings
- Managing Performance & Planning to Work Efficiently
- Managing Projects
- Working with Costs & Budgets
- Managing Conflict & Stress in the Workplace
Throughout the programme Volvo provided valuable feedback from each module, which enabled us to develop the solution dynamically and in response to developments in the business.
Return on Investment
All Volvo's Managers that attended the programme had to present to Volvo's own Board of Directors, outlining what they had taken from the programme and what they intended to do in the future to continue development as a Leader and to have an impact on the performance of Volvo in their own areas. The feedback was resoundingly positive with all learners reporting improved understanding of their roles and their ability to deliver leadership in their own areas. All learners followed through to successfully gain their ILM qualifications and in doing so completed a range of work based projects that directly impacted on the business, producing a variety of positive outcomes in local strategic business units.
