Lewis Pugh

Moving from barista to warehouse storeman, Lewis is only a few months into working at Eddify Technologies in Swansea.

His Training Advisor, Glenn, recently told us how he’s making strides in his Storage and Warehousing qualification, so we caught up with him to find out how it’s all been going.

Hey Lewis! Please could you introduce yourself?

I’m Lewis Pugh. I work for Eddify Technologies in the warehouse, as a storeman. I’ve been doing it for just over six months now, so I haven’t been doing it for very long.

Before this, I was doing personal training on the side and working at Costa Coffee.

It’s a bit of a career change, but I’ve been enjoying it so far.

Lovely. What made you want to make the change?

To be honest, when I applied for it, I thought, “well, I’ll give it a go” and I was quite shocked. I didn’t think I’d get in. But I always wanted to do something a bit different than what I’ve done before.

A new challenge?

Yeah, yeah.

And what apprenticeship are you doing with us, Lewis?

The NVQ in Storage and Warehousing.

Are you enjoying it?

Yeah, it’s been good.

What’s it being like working with Glenn?

Yeah, he’s been great. He’s been a good laugh. I’m quite chuffed when he comes in. It’s a bit of a break from the normal routine.

We’ve been recording lots of videos and stuff like that. It’s a lot easier for me than endlessly typing text. Once it’s recorded, it’s done.

And how does your employer support you?

It’s been good. Whenever Glenn comes in, we’re able to just crack on. It feels pretty easy-going in that regard.

What motivates you to learn personally?

I always want to get as much under my belt as possible. My workplace offered me First Aid and Fire Marshall courses, and I said yes.  I think you should always take as many opportunities as you can. You never know in the future what that could bring you.

And do you think taking an apprenticeship has changed the way you work or your confidence at work?

With previous jobs I’ve had, like when I was a PT, I had to do a certificate for that. But it definitely made it feel a little more official for me, I’d say. I know that I have done that.

And what advice would you give to people thinking of taking up an apprenticeship?

I’d say if you have that opportunity, especially if it’s a field you really want to get into, definitely take it. I think it speaks a lot if you’re going through the official channels and you’re getting actual, genuine experience as well. You’re always going to have that.

Some people think they always need direct academic work. I feel like there’s an opportunity sometimes that may be neglected.

I think a lot of people aren’t really told about apprenticeships when they leave in school too. It’s almost like you’re just expected to go down the university route.

And for some, it’s obviously works – if you’re going for a certain field, you have to. But I feel like people think there’s only one route in.

And it’s that hands-on work as well which makes a difference. So, my last question is, what are your career aspirations? Will we see you in 10 years’ time?

I want to push my way up the ladder in some way, shape or form. What that looks like now, I haven’t got a huge idea. My pie in the sky dream would be to run my own gym.

I will say there’s lots of bits in the apprenticeship that translate like how stock is kept, how to move it using the forklift. It’s all valuable. I think it’s learning skills you can take to a lot of places.

We’re excited to see where you go from here, Lewis!
