The course covers the essentials of first aid through a variety of theoretical input and practical demonstrations.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and practice first aid procedures applicable to adults, babies and children and can be adapted to any work situation.

The course will cover:

  • A clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Tools and techniques on how to assess an incident
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Know how to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock
  • Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury

This course is ideally suited for individuals over the age of 16 working in, or managing a team, in all environments. For regulatory purposes, successfully completing an EFAW course will enable the delegate to act as a first-aider in the workplace.

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Role and responsibility of first aider
  • Dealing with accidents and illness
  • Assessment of a situation and casualty
  • Causes, symptoms and treatment of shock
  • Assessment of consciousness
  • Assessment of wounds and bleeding
  • Fractures, sprains and strains
  • Treatment of burns and scalds
  • Basic life support
  • Contents of a first aid box

Pre-course preparation

No prior experience or preparation is required prior to the programme.

Assessment

There is a short multi-choice test at the end of the course. The certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue; however it is strongly recommended that an annual refresher course is completed.
