About the Manufacturing Apprenticeship

The level 2 Manufacturing Apprenticeships in Wales cater to individuals in roles related to manufacturing, packaging, and quality inspection of products.

All Welsh apprenticeships are planned around a framework of learning and accreditation. The manufacturing apprenticeship consists of four qualifications:

  1. NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Performing Manufacturing Operations
  2. Level 2 Award in Industrial Environment Awareness
  3. Essential Communication Skills at Level 1
  4. Essential Application of Number Skills at level 1

The Four Manufacturing Apprenticeship Qualifications

1) NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Performing Manufacturing Operations

Apprentices complete the Diploma in Performing Manufacturing Operations qualification on the job, and in the workplace.

They gather evidence to illustrate competence in their day-to-day work, supported by an experienced TSW Assessor that guides them through every step.

The qualification consists of three mandatory units, which are:

  • Health and Safety
  • Promoting Effective Working Relationships
  • Contribute to Effective Team Working

Then, select four optional units from an extensive list to create a qualification that matches their role as closely as possible. Some examples of the units available are:

  • Transferring materials
  • Preparing for manufacturing operations
  • Concluding manufacturing operations
  • Ensuring effective handover of manufacturing operations
  • Receiving and checking incoming materials
  • Controlling manufacturing operations
  • Contributing to improving effectiveness in the workplace
  • Analysing the results of inspection and confirming quality of production
  • Recording and reporting inspection and test results
  • Producing shaped products
  • Producing products by assembly operations
  • Producing joined products
  • Producing products by processing
  • Producing formed products
  • Finishing products
  • Producing moulded products
  • Producing packaged products
  • Making products using computer-controlled equipment
  • Manufacturing products using combined manufacturing operations
  • Analysing the results of inspection and confirming quality of production
  • Carrying out inspection and testing activities

2) Level 2 Award in Industrial Environment Awareness

This qualification aims to provide health and safety-related knowledge for those working in an industrial environment.

Learners and employers can enjoy flexible delivery through a workbook that incorporates ‘knowledge checks’ throughout the learning outcome requirements. The TSW Assessor supports and reviews the process.

After completing the workbook and gaining confidence in the knowledge, learners take a short online examination of 20 multiple-choice questions based on the workbook’s content.

3) Essential Communication Skills at Level 1

Apprentices will be exempt from this qualification if they provide a GCSE certificate for English Language or Literature at grade G or above.

4) Essential Application of Number Skills at Level 1

Apprentices will be exempt from this qualification if they provide a GCSE certificate for Maths at grade G or above.

Eligibility Criteria

The Welsh Government provides a set of apprenticeship eligibility rules that determine whether an employee can access funding. These rules are subject to change, so please consult our Advisors for the most up-to-date advice.
