According to NEBOSH research, two-thirds of health and safety practitioners now have environmental management as part of their overall day-to-day responsibilities at work.
Possessing the skills delivered in the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate (EMC) will give you life-long environmental assessment and management qualities, and will help businesses to meet the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard.
The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate has two units and key focuses, environmental management and assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts.
You will learn about:
Within the units are nine chapters to work through, that give you a rigorous understanding of environmental management and assessment.
On completion of the course, you will return to work with the ability to:
Unit EC1 is a taught unit assessed by a two-hour written examination. The examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
Unit EC2 requires the candidate to carry out an environmental review of a workplace or organisation and produce a justified action plan to improve performance. This practical application must be completed and returned to the course provider by a date determined by them and normally within 10 working day of the exam.
You’re assessed based on your ability to demonstrate awareness of environmental issues, plus recognise, explain, discuss and plan strategies to manage environmental factors, creating positive ethical and fiscal outcomes, that benefit your business.
“We know assessments can be challenging, but our expert training team will be on hand to support you with any concerns and make sure you are ready to sit the assessment.
Don’t worry – we’ll make sure you have everything you need!” – Stuart Davies, Managing Director at TSW Training

Poor environmental management and assessment come at a cost for businesses, putting your reputation and profits at stake. Conflict with residents, prosecution and claims, plus the cost of clean ups, are all business risks if your processes don’t incorporate environmental assessments and controls.
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is an environmental performance framework that monitors the impact your business makes on the environment and shows you how to make improvements.
To earn the qualification, you will be expected to attend 34 hours with a trainer and 25 hours of private study.
The eight-hour assessment comprises of an open book exam (Unit EMC1) and assessed assignment (Unit EMC2).
In the five-hour exam, you respond to a scenario and answer theoretical and practical questions covered in the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate course content.
The three-hour assignment asks you to assess environmental aspects and impacts in your workplace or a place of work you can visit.
You’re assessed based on your ability to demonstrate awareness of environmental issues, plus recognise, explain, discuss and plan strategies to manage environmental factors, creating positive ethical and fiscal outcomes, that benefit your business.
Check your examination entry confirmation paperwork for the specific date, but your results will always arrive within 50 days of submitting your exam and practical assessment.
