The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate is for managers, supervisors, and employees with environmental management responsibilities.

According to NEBOSH research, two-thirds of health and safety practitioners now have environmental management as part of their day-to-day work responsibilities; this is the perfect course for those people.

Possessing the skills delivered in the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate (EMC) will give delegates life-long environmental assessment and management qualities that will help their businesses meet the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard.

Course Content

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate has two units:

  • EMC1 – Environmental management
  • EMC2 – Assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts

Within the units, delegates study the following nine elements, exploring environmental management and assessment principles:

  1. Foundations in environmental management
  2. Environmental management systems
  3. Assessing environmental aspects and impacts 
  4. Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies 
  5. Control of emissions to air 
  6. Control of environmental noise
  7. Control of contamination of water sources 
  8. Control of waste and land use
  9. Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, you will return to work with the ability to:

  • Justify environmental management in the workplace
  • Recognise which workplace activities may be subject to environmental legislation or enforcement
  • Assess environmental aspects and impacts and evaluate existing controls
  • Support environmental emergency planning
  • Understand the importance of reducing environmental harm
  • Outline the issues associated with waste and its management
  • Explain the pros and cons of various energy sources and how to use them more efficiently

The qualification is broken down into two units, the EMC1 and EMC2:

Unit EMC1

Unit EMC1 is an open-book digital assessment taken remotely via NEBOSH’s platform. Delegates have 24 hours to access, complete and submit their paper, starting from 11 am (UK time) on the chosen examination date.

The pass mark for the EMC1 exam is 45+.

Unit EMC2

Unit EMC2 requires the candidate to conduct an environmental review of a workplace or organisation and produce a justified action plan to improve performance.

This practical application must be completed and returned to TSW within 10 working days of the exam date provided.

You’re assessed based on your ability to demonstrate awareness of environmental issues. You must recognise, explain, discuss and plan strategies to manage environmental factors, creating positive ethical and fiscal outcomes that benefit your business.

The course consists of two units: EMC1 (Environmental Management) and EMC2 (Assessing Environmental Aspects and Associated Impacts).

It includes 34 taught hours, 25 hours of private study, and approximately 8 hours to be spent on assessments, totalling 67 hours.

The provisional pass mark for Unit EMC1 is 45%. For Unit EMC2, the pass standard is 100%, meaning all assessment guidance standards must be met.

A ‘Pass’ must be achieved in both units to be awarded the qualification.
