Category A asbestos training (such as this course) tackles general awareness and avoidance of asbestos. This means it does not qualify delegates to work with or disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in any way.
If you need to work with ACMs, you must complete a higher level of asbestos training, such as category B or C.
Category B training is for non-licensable work with asbestos, which involves low-risk activities that do not require a licence from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Non-licensable work includes drilling holes in asbestos cement sheets, removing asbestos floor tiles, or encapsulating ACMs with paint.
Category B training covers the practical skills and knowledge required to carry out these tasks safely and effectively and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and decontamination procedures.
Category C training is for licensable work with asbestos, which involves high-risk activities requiring a HSE licence.
Examples of licensable work include removing asbestos insulation, spraying asbestos coatings, or demolishing asbestos structures.
Category C training covers the same topics as Category B, but in more depth and detail, as well as the specific legal requirements and responsibilities for licensed contractors.
