IOSH Working Safely

The IOSH Working Safely course is a one-day program that covers the essential aspects of workplace health and safety. It is designed for all staff members across various types of businesses.

The course focuses on individual responsibilities for health and safety, potential workplace hazards and risks, and methods for managing these risks.

The objective of the Working Safely course is to engage employees in health and safety practices. It emphasises working in ways that reduce the likelihood of delegates:

  • Being injured
  • Injuring someone else
  • Damaging their health
  • Damaging someone else’s health

The IOSH Working Safely course does not aim to turn delegates into safety experts; it highlights the importance of health and safety and demonstrates how individuals can significantly impact their own well-being and that of others by changing their behaviour.

Working Safely is for individuals at any level and in any sector who need a solid foundation in the essentials of health and safety.

Everyone at work should have an understanding of why they must ‘work safely’, and this course offers exactly that.

No prior experience or preparation is required before the programme. It’s great to start thinking about health and safety in your organisation and the things you see around you. This will all be helpful for your learning.

Course Content

The content and delivery are enjoyable and stimulating, produced to deliver vital health and safety messages. First-class, jargon-free technical content based on what people need to know in practice, not off-putting legal language but clear scenarios drawn from genuine work situations to drive home practical points.

The course covers the following modules:

  • Part one: Introducing working safely
  • Part two: Defining hazard and risk
  • Part three: Identifying common hazards
  • Part four: Improving safety performance

Your understanding of health and safety basics is assessed in two parts during the day’s training:

  • Part A – an invigilated, closed-book, end-of-course multi-format question paper
  • Part B – an invigilated, closed-book, end-of-course multi-choice hazard-spotting exercise.

You will complete both parts at the end of the one-day course.

The IOSH Working Safely course is a basic introduction to health and safety, designed for employees at all levels.

It is important for businesses as it ensures that all staff members understand the essentials of safety and health, contributing to a safer workplace and reducing the risk of accidents and illness.

The course can be delivered in-person or online.

It is designed to be completed in a single day, with assessments including a multiple-choice test and hazard-spotting exercises to ensure understanding and retention of the material.

Benefits include greater productivity due to fewer hours lost to sickness and accidents, improved safety awareness and culture across the company, active staff involvement in improving workplace safety, and an enhanced reputation within your supply chain.

The IOSH Working Safely certificate does not expire; however, it is good practice to refresh safety training periodically to ensure that employees stay up-to-date with best practices and any changes in regulations.

The course provides a solid workplace safety and health foundation, complementing more advanced or specialised training.

It helps create a baseline understanding among all employees, supporting your implementation of broader health and safety policies and initiatives.

While the core content of the IOSH Working Safely course is standardised to maintain consistency and quality, we offer the flexibility to incorporate examples and case studies relevant to your industry or specific workplace scenarios.

Upon completion, you can expect improved safety awareness and practices among employees, reduced workplace accidents, a more proactive approach to identifying and managing risks, and a stronger organisational safety culture.

The assessment for Managing Safely consists of two components: a multiple-choice question paper and a practical risk assessment project. To pass the multiple-choice question paper, a score of 36 out of 60 is required. For the practical risk assessment project, a pass mark of 23 out of 38 is necessary.
