Here is a general guideline of the typical durations for our IOSH courses:

IOSH Managing Safely

The IOSH Managing Safely course lasts for three days when delivered as a live online course or a classroom course.

During the three days, you will complete the multiple-choice examination plus all the learning you need to write a practical risk assessment.

After the three-day course ends, you will have ten days to complete the practical in your own time.

IOSH Working Safely

The IOSH Working Safely is a one-day course. Your understanding of health and safety basics is evaluated using multi-format questions and a hazard-spotting exercise carried out during the day’s training.

On successful completion of the IOSH Working Safely course you will receive an IOSH accredited certificate.

Yes, we offer an IOSH Managing Safely Course online, which is identical to the classroom IOSH Managing Safely course, delivering the same contents and outcomes. Hazard perception, risk management and health and safety responsibilities are all on the agenda – the only difference is that it’s delivered on any internet-enabled device.

By taking the IOSH training online, you’re signing up for an easy, safe and convenient way to get a world-leading qualification.

For the IOSH Managing Safely, the certificate will be awarded upon the successful completion of two assessments;

  • a multiple-choice exam
  • a practical work-based

The cost of both is included in the price of the course.

For the e-learning, the multiple-choice question exam is completed online and the practical risk assessment project is completed offline before being uploaded to the platform.

For the IOSH Working Safely, your understanding of health and safety basics is evaluated using multi-format questions and a hazard-spotting exercise carried out during the day’s training. On successful completion of the IOSH Working Safely course you will receive an IOSH accredited certificate.

If you fail the IOSH Managing Safely exam, you’ll have 20 days to re-sit. But you can sit the exam as many times as you need to, but whether you’ll have to pay the fees again is up to your training provider.

Once the exam is done and dusted, you can focus all your attention on the practical risk assessment project.

The highest IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) membership is the Chartered Fellow Membership (CFMIOSH) status. Achieving CFMIOSH demonstrates the highest level of competence, expertise, and experience in the field of occupational safety and health.

As far as qualifications go, the pinnacle is the NEBOSH Diploma.

No, IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) certificates do not have an expiration date. Once you have successfully completed an IOSH course and received a certificate, it remains valid indefinitely. The certificate serves as proof that you have completed the training and acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in the specific area of occupational safety and health covered by the course.

However, health and safety regulations change over time – so it’s important to keep abreast of these. IOSH encourages its members to engage in ongoing learning and professional development to enhance their competence and stay up-to-date with industry trends.

Not for the IOSH Managing Safely or IOSH Working Safely – all ability levels are welcome.

IOSH is a Chartered body, NEBOSH is an examination body

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, or as it’s more widely known, IOSH, is a Chartered membership body for workers in health and safety that also offers qualifications.

It’s based in the UK, but it’s the largest health and safety body in the world, with 48,000 members worldwide.

It’s self-regulating and governing, meaning it’s widely trusted and highly respected. As a Chartered body, IOSH keeps company with Oxford and Cambridge University, among other world-leading organisations.

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), is an awarding body. It too is based in the UK and offers 18 qualifications in health, safety and environmental management.

The NEBOSH General is perfect for those with health and safety responsibilities, but if you are looking for a lower-level course to provide fundamental knowledge and understanding, the IOSH Managing Safely might be a better fit. Take a look at our IOSH vs NEBOSH comparison.

The IOSH Managing Safely is an internationally recognised health and safety qualification designed for managers and those with health and safety responsibilities.

The highly practical and creative course format will take you or your staff on a step-by-step journey, supported by our expert team of trainers.

The IOSH Managing Safely course lasts for three days when delivered as a live online course or a classroom course.

During the three days, you will complete the multiple-choice examination plus all the learning you need to write a practical risk assessment.

After the three-day course ends, you will have ten days to complete the practical in your own time.

The e-learning course can be taken using your own time, meaning you can learn at your own pace.

The IOSH Managing Safely is a Level 2 qualification, equivalent to a GCSE.

It’s an entry-level health and safety course aimed at people with health and safety management responsibilities at work.

The IOSH Managing Safely syllabus contains a balance of theory and practical examples covered over seven modules. Each module is reinforced with real-world occupational safety and health examples, scenarios, and overviews that support the intended learning outcomes.

A total of 22 guided learning hours consisting of:

  • 21 hours of learning
  • One hour for assessment (including introduction/ instruction time of 15 minutes).

The guided learning hours can be delivered flexibly, but can not be delivered in less than three days.

The IOSH assessment is to be completed once the full course has been completed.

The pass marks required for IOSH Managing Safely are as follows:

  • Multiple choice exam pass mark – 36 out of 60
  • Practical work-based risk assessment – 23 out of 38

If you don’t pass the first time you are eligible for a free resit.

Exam Length

The IOSH Managing Safely exam is fully integrated into the three days you’ll spend on a live online or classroom course or the e-learning course you complete in your own time.

You’ll have 45 minutes to answer 30 questions, including multiple-choice, true or false or one-word open-question formats.

Practical Assessment Length

You’ll have two weeks to complete the practical from the last day of your live online or classroom course. If you’re taking the e-learning course, your ten days will start from when you complete your exam.

By the end of the IOSH Working Safely course delegates will be able to:

  • Carry out work activities without risk to yourselves or others and understand the consequences to both the individual and their organisation if you fail to work safely
  • Identify hazards, risks and risks controls and understand the importance of risk assessment with examples of everyday use of risk assessment
  • Understand how to take appropriate workplace precautions and their importance in the working environment
  • Appreciate the importance of a health and safety management system
  • Identify lines of communication with respect to health and safety in your place of work
  • Identify safety signs and signals
  • Understand emergency, accident plans and procedures and how and who to report accidents, incidents and near misses to, in your place of work
  • Receive a nationally recognised certificate from Europe’s leading professional body
