IOSH Managing Safely is a course designed specifically for those responsible for one or more employees.

Split over two core learning areas, a taught module, and a practical exercise, the course allows managers and supervisors to develop their skills before implementing them.

The main topics covered in the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate course help managers improve their ability to manage resources and risk. These core topics are:

Course Introduction

Managers are given an overview of the course and a better understanding of what “Health and Safety” means and their responsibilities in leading the provision.

Assessing risks

Overviewing the importance of risk assessments and showcasing how to conduct them efficiently. As a core area of the syllabus, you may only succeed in the course if you know How To Take & Pass The IOSH Managing Safely Risk Assessment Project.

Controlling risks

This section details Safe Systems of Work (SSW) and legal requirements for safeguarding physical and mental well-being in the workplace.

Identifying hazards

Here, managers learn about the most common hazards in the workplace, from slips and falls to bullying and harassment, as well as causes and preventative measures.

Investigating accidents and incidents

A section dedicated to defining correct incident investigation methods and appropriate responses.

Understanding your responsibilities

This course element focuses on a manager’s duties as laid out by legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).

Measuring performance

The final area of the assessment offers insights into health and safety monitoring and auditing processes.

Learners will also be given case studies and practical hazard perception, response, and mitigation examples throughout these core topics.

Upon completion of the course, managers will fully understand their responsibilities in assessing potential risks. They will also know how to respond to hazards by leveraging a risk control methodology.

Is IOSH Managing Safely Worth It?

An estimated 7,500 people die every day globally as a result of unsafe and unhealthy working conditions.

Preventing work-related deaths and illnesses should be the only encouragement needed to enhance the quality of occupational safety and health knowledge in your business.

The IOSH Managing Safely course delivers this improvement and empowers managers to safeguard physical and mental well-being standards throughout the company.

Who is the IOSH Managing Safely Course For?

  • Middle Managers
  • Line Manager

Health and Safety Manager/Coordinator

How Long Does The Course Last?

The course lasts for three days when delivered as a live online course or a classroom course or at your own pace via e-learning.

During the three days, you will complete the multiple-choice examination plus all the learning you need to write a practical risk assessment.

After the three-day course ends, you will have ten days to complete the practical in your own time.

One core benefit of the IOSH Managing Safely qualification is that it lasts a lifetime.

Once students obtain their certification, there is no expiration date or requirement to resit the course. However, staying updated with the latest best practices in the field of occupational health is still recommended.

Additionally, if you want to continue your safety education journey, many who pass the IOSH Managing Safely course go on to take a NEBOSH General Certificate.

The NEBOSH course offers more in-depth health and safety knowledge for managers and supervisors who are aiming to progress into a health and safety-centric career.

Alternatively, if you would like to develop your generalist safety knowledge, we also offer other IOSH courses.

Man is wearing protective googles and hard hat.

What is IOSH Managing Safely Equivalent to?

The IOSH Managing Safely Course is a Level 2 qualification, which is equivalent to a GCSE, as opposed to IOSH Working Safely, which is an entry-level course that only takes a day to complete.

However, both IOSH and NEBOSH offer health and safety accreditations from level 2 upwards. If you want to pursue a career in the safety industry, we’d recommend the more detailed NEBOSH course.

As we mentioned previously, the IOSH qualification is more targeted to line managers who require solid OSH knowledge to manage one or more people safely.

Another entry-level assessment to consider is the HABC Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment. However, this area of study is more steered towards risk perception and recognition.

Is IOSH Managing Safely a Level 3 Qualification?

IOSH Managing Safely is a Level 2 qualification. If you’re searching for Level 3 accreditation, the IOSH Level 3 Certificate in OSH Principles and Practice is the best option.

The Level 3 Certificate in OSH Principles and Practice is for individuals aiming to pursue a career in OSH across several industries.

Benefits of Taking the IOSH Managing Safely Course

There are several benefits to taking the IOSH Managing Safely course. However, one overarching advantage to businesses is the development of management and employees.

Hesham Alawi Abdulla of Aluminium Bahrain highlighted that the course invigorated his firm’s safety consciousness and gave his supervisors additional understanding.

“Managing Safely has meant that our supervisors are now talking about safety issues, with others keen to take the course. It’s because they’ve heard that the training is serious and constructive, with strong assessments and engaging instructors. Feedback shows that delegates enjoy the presentation style too.”

But there are some other advantages to taking the course, from enhanced efficiency to cost savings. Here is a more comprehensive list of benefits:

Instills proven methodologies

The course equips participants with the necessary tools and understanding to identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and implement risk control methodology.

Enhanced safety standards

Recent studies showed 561,000 workers sustained a non-fatal injury in 2022/23. By applying these learnings, managers can help create a safer working environment, reducing accidents and injuries.

Compliance with Legal Requirements

The course covers legal responsibilities related to health and safety, ensuring that participants know their obligations.

Enhanced Risk Management

Participants gain a solid understanding of risk assessment and management strategies. This enables them to proactively identify and mitigate hazards, minimising the likelihood of workplace incidents.

Improved Safety Culture

The course emphasises the importance of effective communication and employee engagement in creating a positive safety culture.

Cost Savings

Lost workdays, insurance premiums, legal fees, and compensation claims cost UK businesses around £20.7 billion in 2012/22. Active injury prevention methods and practices can mitigate these expenses.

Professional Growth and Recognition

Obtaining this qualification enhances managers’ professional development and credibility. Don’t forget that you can apply for student membership with IOSH when you enrol.

Available online

You can take the IOSH Managing Safely as an in-classroom or live online course. Or in your own time through e-learning.

Enhanced reputation with supply chain

Brands are more likely to partner with companies that have a business-wide approach to health and safety. Additionally, in the food industry, 35% of injuries come from employees manually handling heavy products or packages from suppliers. Supply chain-related injuries like this can affect the smooth running of restaurants and other services in the hospitality sector.

Give yourself and your employees the best chance at developing their careers by passing the IOSH Managing Safely course with TSW Training.
