ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability & Environmental Management (Formerly IEMA)

The ISEP Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management is a 5-day, globally recognised qualification for anyone starting out in an environment- or sustainability-focused role.

You’ll cover a wide range of environmental, sustainability and governance principles while exploring environmental management tools and skills that you can apply immediately in your organisation.

On successful completion of the course, you’ll receive the ISEP Foundation Certificate and gain ISEP Associate Membership (AISEP) status.

What Are the Entry Requirements for the ISEP Foundation Certificate?

There are no entry requirements for the Foundation Certificate.

You can take this course without having any experience or knowledge in environmental management or sustainability.

Over the five days on the ISEP Foundation Certificate, you will be armed with all the necessary environmental and sustainability knowledge.

The ISEP Foundation Certificate is assessed via a one-hour, multiple-choice online examination.

It’s an open-book exam, which means you can access your course notes during the exam.

You will be given a 28-day window for submitting the assessments, typically the 1st to 28th of every month.

ISEP will provide login details, and you can log in anytime during this window to take the test. Once you start the test, it must be done in one sitting.

Your exam result is displayed immediately following completion, so there is no need to wait to find out if you have been successful.

This is when you are purchasing the ISEP Foundation on behalf of your organisation and wish to have it delivered exclusively to your employees.

The cost for in-house delivery varies depending on exact numbers and the mode of delivery (i.e. Virtual learning versus classroom delivery).

You can find practice exam questions for the ISEP Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management from several sources:

  • TSW (On course): TSW provides practice materials and quizzes as part of their courses.
  • Study groups and forums: Online forums like LinkedIn groups or environmental management communities may share tips and sample questions.

If you fail the Foundation Certificate exam on your first sitting, don’t worry.

Every learner can re-sit the examination by re-registering either directly through IEMA or through their IEMA Training Centre and sitting the examination during the next available exam window.

There is no limit to the number of examination re-sits a candidate can take; the first re-sit can be taken free of charge, but thereafter re-sit fees apply.

The IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management is not a regulated qualification. Therefore it does not have an official level.

The qualification provides an introduction to environmental sustainability and management and is suitable for individuals who want to understand environmental issues and their impacts on businesses, organisations, and society.

As an equivalent to similar qualifications, the Foundation is estimated to be equivalent to a level 3. 

If you already have environmental and sustainability knowledge

…you can become an Associate Member of ISEP by registering for the Associate exam direct with ISEP

The exam, which is available monthly, consists of an online multiple-choice test that lasts one hour. You will have the option to select either the environment or sustainability version of the exam.

If you have completed the ISEP Foundation Certificate course in the last three years

…you are eligible to fast-track your associate application. When you apply, select that you are eligible for the fast-track. When you do this, you will be asked to provide a valid copy of your course certificate.

If you haven’t taken the Foundation course and haven’t the knowledge and experience

You must complete the ISEP Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management course – Book your place now.

Associate Membership Costs

The fee to become an Associate Member is £245.50, which includes an application fee and your year 1 membership fee.

If you take the Foundation course with TSW, these first-year fees are all included in the price.

IEMA Associate Renewal Fees

There is a £154.50 annual renewal fee, payable to IEMA.

To renew your AIEMA membership, you must log in to the MyIEMA portal, where you can find and pay your invoice.

No, your certificate will not expire. Once you have taken the course and gained your certificate you won’t need to re-take the course or participate in a refresher course.
