Course Info

The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher® course offers individuals an opportunity to ‘refresh’ their knowledge and understanding of the essential components covered in IOSH Managing Safely®.

IOSH recommends that you take the refresher course within three to five years of completing the Managing Safely® course.

On the refresher course, you will cover:

  • Thinking Back – reflect on key learnings from the Managing Safely course.
  • Leadership – understand the importance of leadership in fostering a positive safety culture.
  • Plan – learn about safety and health policies and how to implement them.
  • Do – conduct a risk assessment and communicate findings and the safety plan to the workforce.
  • Check – explore different types of data to evaluate the safety plan’s effectiveness.
  • Act – recognise the value of performance reviews and continuous improvement.

By revisiting these topics, you will boost your confidence in promoting effective safety practices.

You will also have an opportunity to reflect on how they have applied their original managing safely knowledge following their initial training.

Additionally, you’ll get the latest updates on changes in legislation, standards, and best practice guidelines.

Course Prerequisites

To enrol in this course, you must have previously completed the IOSH Managing Safely course.

This course is designed for individuals who have completed the IOSH Managing Safely course and wish to refresh their knowledge.

Just like the main course, the refresher is for managers and supervisors responsible for managing health and safety in the workplace, regardless of the sector or organisation.

The refresher course has six main themes that you will cover:

  • Thinking back – First up, you will reflect on what you took away from your original Managing Safely course. You’ll revisit the key reasons for managing safely and recap key terms in an engaging, participative way.
  • Leadership – you’ll explore why leadership is essential and how to create a positive safety culture.
  • Plan: You will dive into a health and safety policy and what it includes before tackling ways to implement it.
  • Do – You will undertake a risk assessment exercise and uncover the best ways to communicate your findings and plan to the workforce.
  • Check – You’ll consider the types of data that exist, what can be measured, and how this helps in seeing if ‘the plan’ is implemented and working.
  • Act – Last but not least, you’ll find out why it is essential to review performance, act on lessons learned and strive to improve continually. You’ll end the day by reflecting on what you have learned and how you will use this in your workplace.

The IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is assessed via a 30-minute multiple-choice exam sat at the end of the course.

In the exam, you’ll answer 21 questions in various formats.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Every three years, that’s the guidance provided by IOSH.

Taking the Managing Safely Refresher every three years makes sure you stay up to date with changing legislation, guidance and best practice.

Not specifically. However, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to provide ‘adequate’ training to their employees.

It does not establish a required interval for this type of training. Instead, to stay within the law, employers should evaluate the risks in their workplaces and determine appropriate training schedules.

Similar to the full IOSH Managing Safely, the refresher is a Level 2 equivalent qualification.

The course is available in two formats: a live online course or an in-person classroom course, both are one day in length (6-8 hours).

To pass the exam, you must get 20 marks out of a possible 32.

If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you are entitled to a free resit.

You have 30 minutes to complete the 21-question exam.
