The Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is designed for individuals responsible for the welfare of infants and children. It covers the essential skills needed to provide immediate and effective first aid to young children.

This qualification meets the requirements outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and ensures that your paediatric first aiders are qualified to administer first aid for a period of three years. After this period, they will need to renew their certification by retaking the course.

Unit 1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid Unit Number

Unit Introduction: The purpose of this unit is for learners to attain knowledge and practical competencies required to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations.

  1. Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints

    • 1.1 Recognise a suspected:
      • Fracture or dislocation
      • Sprain or strain
    • 1.2 Identify how to administer first aid for an infant or a child with a suspected:
      • Fracture or dislocation
      • Sprain or strain
    • 1.3 Demonstrate how to apply:
      • A support sling
      • An elevated sling
  2. Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected head and spinal injuries

    • 2.1 Recognise a suspected:

Assessment Method

The Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is assessed through a combination of practical assessments and multiple-choice theory exams. This ensures that you can effectively demonstrate your theoretical knowledge and practical first-aid skills.

  1. Practical Assessment:

    • Throughout the course, you will be continuously assessed on your ability to perform practical first aid skills in various simulated scenarios.
    • These practical skills are essential to ensure you can confidently handle real-life paediatric first-aid situations.
  2. Theory Assessment:

    • You will complete a multiple-choice theory assessment to test your understanding of the theoretical aspects of paediatric first aid.
    • The theory assessment consists of 25 questions, and you must achieve a score of 100% to pass.

Certification:

After successfully completing the practical and theory assessments, you will be awarded the Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) certificate. This certification, which is valid for three years, demonstrates your competence in providing first aid to infants and children.

Validity and Renewal:

  • The certification is valid for three years from the date of issue.
  • To renew your certification after three years, you must retake the course.
  • Annual knowledge refreshers are recommended to ensure you stay up-to-date with the latest first aid practices.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

  • If you have previously completed the Emergency Paediatric First Aid unit, you may transfer this achievement to the Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF), provided both qualifications are completed within a 7-week period.

Completing this course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to effectively provide first aid to infants and children in various emergencies, ensuring their safety and well-being.
